OLSH Welcomes New Faculty

Karla Garner - Spanish

Mrs. Garner is joining OLSH after a 3-year tenure as a Spanish teacher at St. Edward the Confessor Parish School in Dana Point, CA. She is a native Spanish speaker and devoted Catholic High School teacher, for over 15 years. She holds her Bachelor of Arts in Social Science/Secondary Education from Robert Morris University and has extensive travel and residence experience in Puerto Rico and Mexico. Mrs. Garner is also the mother of an incoming OLSH freshman! In her free time, Mrs. Garner enjoys cooking, spending time outdoors, and being with her family.

Theresa (Valenty) Buettner ‘04 - Theology

Mrs. Buettner is excited to be returning to her alma mater to teach Theology I courses this year. She is looking forward to using her experience in ministry to give students the knowledge they need to know and understand Theology, and has a strong desire that each student encounters Jesus in a deeper and more personal way through her classes. Mrs. Buettner is currently completing her Master of Theological Studies at Franciscan University of Steubenville and previously worked as a Catechist at Sts. John and Paul Catholic Church. She spends her free time with her family (husband, Matt, and 5 kids) and enjoys a good cup of coffee, jogging, praying, baking, and relaxing whenever she can!

Christina Tarnik - History

Miss Tarnik is joining the OLSH community after working as a Classroom Teacher at Lake Gibson High School in Lakeland, FL, where she taught 12th grade AP Macroeconomics and Modern U.S History for the past year. She received her Masters in the Art of Teaching from Duquesne University in May of 2020, with a certification in 7-12 social studies. Miss Tarnik is excited to be back in Pittsburgh for a new school year! In her free time, Miss Tarnik likes to attend trivia nights and Pitt football games. She also crochets, draws, and dabbles in other types of crafts, and loves spending time with her family.

Additionally, Mary Kate Opferman will be joining us as a counselor from the Allegheny Intermediate Unit. Ms. Opferman will be at OLSH on Mondays and Thursdays throughout the school year to provide additional learning assistance for students.

Welcome to OLSH!
