Traditionally, the week leading up to OLSH Prom is SADD Week. Members of Students Against Destructive Decisions plan activities and themes for the week to raise awareness of the consequences of making dangerous decisions.
The group kicked off the week with the mock arrest of an OLSH senior. After acquiring permission from his parents, Pittsburgh police offers came to campus on Tuesday morning to "arrest" the student in front of his peers. The school then gathered for an assembly in the AAC to reveal that the arrest was fake, and to discuss what had just transpired. The police officers and Judge Michele Santicola joined us for the assembly to speak directly with students. They addressed topics like short and long-term repercussions for committing crimes as minors and adults, as well as the repercussions for students' parents. The "arrested" student spoke briefly about his experience being watched by his classmates and sitting in a police car.
While the ultimate goal of SADD Week is to prevent any student from making bad decisions, this serves as special encouragement for Prom-goers to maintain responsible attitudes.
