OLSH Theatre Shines at PHSSL Drama Festival with Award-Winning Performance

“I had an unforgettable time, and I'm so glad that I was able to experience this before my time here ran out,” said senior Kieran Tyler. “Joining OLSH Theatre turned out to be the best decision I've ever made.”

Over the weekend of January 3, 2025, 18 OLSH students traveled to Bloomsburg University to compete in the Pennsylvania High School Speech League (PHSSL) Drama Festival. The group performed Pullman Car Hiawatha, a one-act play by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Thornton Wilder, known for his iconic work Our Town.

“Watching performers from other schools and performing for their peers is a fantastic learning opportunity for our students,” said Ms. Dolores Manuel, OLSH Theatre director.

The OLSH Theatre team earned five awards, including Second Place Overall and Best Technical Crew. Three cast members received individual recognition as part of the All-State Cast: juniors Kayleigh Scialabba-Meehan and Zoe Vesci, and senior Kieran Tyler. This marks another standout year for OLSH Theatre, following a First Place win in 2024 and Third Place in 2023.

Behind the Scenes: Preparation and Performance

The trip began on a chilly Friday morning with a four-hour drive to Bloomsburg. After a quick Sheetz stop, the team headed to the university theater for their technical rehearsal. With just one hour to prepare on stage, they focused on timing and transitions.

“PHSSL was such an exciting opportunity, and I’m grateful to have learned so much from my cast mates, new friends, and experienced sound technicians!” said sophomore Jordan Jones. “Even though I was nervous when we first started rehearsing, running sound and acting in the show at the same time was really fun.”

The next morning, OLSH was the first of four schools to take the stage at 9:00 a.m. Each team was allotted one hour to set up, perform, and clear the stage. Despite the early start and tight schedule, OLSH delivered a seamless and emotionally resonant performance that impressed the judges and audience alike.

“I met so many kind and talented people from other schools who inspired me to work harder as an actress,” Kayleigh said. “Acting has given me life skills that I improved on in this experience.”

A Collaborative Effort

The production of Pullman Car Hiawatha showcased the collaborative spirit of OLSH Theatre, bringing together a diverse group of students from all grade levels, including four seniors, seven juniors, six sophomores, and one freshman. Each member played a critical role in ensuring the play's success, whether on stage or behind the scenes.

"Traveling to Bloomsburg with my friends was a highlight. We bonded more as a team, and it made the experience even more special," Zoe said.

Continuing a Legacy of Excellence

This year’s achievements underscore OLSH Theatre’s dedication to excellence and growth. “This performance was the best these students had ever done with this show,” said Ms. Manuel. “Everyone came together to deliver their best, and it was amazing to watch.”

“It’s truly a blessing to witness our students’ growth each year — both as performers and as individuals,” Ms. Manuel concluded.

OLSH Theatre continues to inspire its students and audiences, setting the stage for future accomplishments.
